To mark the <\/span><\/span>35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, <\/span><\/span>CEI International Affairs<\/span><\/span>, in collaboration with the <\/span><\/span>Young European Federalists<\/span><\/span> (an organization in which several of our students are active), organized a roundtable discussion to reflect on the <\/span><\/span>future of the European Union<\/span><\/span> in the context of ongoing global transformations.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n

The event featured contributions from <\/span><\/span>Fernando <\/span>Perpi\u00f1\u00e1<\/span>-Robert<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, CEI instructor for the Diplomatic Career preparation course and former Spanish ambassador to Germany during the fall of the Wall; <\/span><\/span>Joaquim <\/span>Llimona<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, Director General of CEI; and <\/span><\/span>Pablo Pareja<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, researcher at IBEI, Vice-Rector at UPF, and expert on EU-China relations.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The roundtable was structured around <\/span><\/span>three thematic blocks<\/span><\/span>:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

In the <\/span><\/span>first block<\/span><\/span>, the discussion focused on the most significant achievements of the EU in recent decades, such as the <\/span><\/span>Lisbon Treaty<\/span><\/span>, the creation of the <\/span><\/span>Eurozone<\/span><\/span>, and the development of initiatives like <\/span><\/span>Erasmus<\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span>Next Generation EU<\/span><\/span>. The speakers also reflected on how public <\/span>perception<\/span> of the EU has evolved\u2014from the optimism of the 1980s to today\u2019s context marked by increasing internal fragmentation.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n

The <\/span><\/span>second block<\/span><\/span> addressed the political and social challenges within Europe, including the rise of <\/span><\/span>populism<\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span>far-right movements<\/span><\/span>. Debate <\/span>centered<\/span> on the growing <\/span><\/span>polarization between Eastern and Western European countries<\/span><\/span>, <\/span>exacerbated<\/span> by the <\/span><\/span>war in Ukraine<\/span><\/span>, a conflict that continues to strain the Union\u2019s strategic cohesion.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The <\/span><\/span>third block<\/span><\/span> explored the EU\u2019s role on the <\/span><\/span>international stage<\/span><\/span>. Key topics included the <\/span><\/span>trade war with China<\/span><\/span>, the pressing need for greater <\/span><\/span>strategic autonomy<\/span><\/span>, and the EU\u2019s <\/span><\/span>defense<\/span> and security policies<\/span><\/span>. Other crucial issues such as <\/span><\/span>diversifying strategic resources<\/span><\/span>, the role of <\/span><\/span>NATO<\/span><\/span>, and <\/span><\/span>industrial policy<\/span><\/span> to preserve European competitiveness were also discussed.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The roundtable concluded by reaffirming the <\/span><\/span>European Union\u2019s commitment to integration and cooperation<\/span><\/span> in an increasingly globalized and challenging world. The event not only offered a comprehensive analysis of current <\/span>challenges, but<\/span> also served as a moment to reflect on the role of the EU in the decades to come.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
