International Classroom: Meeting with the Ambassador of Spain in New Delhi

15 May 2014

Introduction

India is a federal parliamentary republic with an indirectly elected president. Regional stability is vital for the country; however, although negotiations have intensified in recent years, it has not yet been possible to reach agreements that stabilise the region.

Despite the country’s high proportion of arable land (53.1% of its territory according to 2011 data from the World Bank), it faces significant challenges with regard to water supply, which tend to be aggravated by pollution and high population growth.

H. E. Mr Gustavo Manuel de Arístegui y San Román has been Ambassador of Spain in New Delhi since 2012. He holds a degree in law and a postgraduate degree in legal studies. Since beginning his diplomatic career in 1989, he has been assigned to various Spanish diplomatic missions in the Middle East and Asia.

In this session, Ambassador Arístegui will explain current Spanish-Indian trade relations, offering participants the opportunity to discuss and reflect on the present economic situation in India, its diplomatic and economic relations with Spain and how these relations are pursued.
