Meeting with the Ambassador of Spain in the Republic of Colombia

30 Mar 2016

Presentation

Colombia is located at the north-western tip of South America. It spans a total area of 440,831.4 mi² and has coasts on the Pacific and Atlantic.

The Colombian economy is currently experiencing a shock to its terms of trade due to declining energy commodity prices. This shock has negatively impacted national income, exports and, in the immediate term, public finances.

The country’s main engine of growth is the construction sector. Its main exports are concentrated in the mining sector, and its mainimports in the industrial sector.

Colombia ranks secondin Latin America in poverty reduction and second amongst the 48 countries worldwide that have most reduced their Gini index.

The Colombian economy is characterised by a free-market orientation and economic openness. To this end, 98.6% of Columbia’s tariff universe is subject to a ‘free’ import regime, whilst the rest requires licences or is prohibited.

In this session, H.E. Mr Ramón Gandarias Alonso de Celis, Ambassador of Spain in Bogota, will offer an overview of the current economic, political and social situation in the country and of its trade and diplomatic relations with Spain.
