Master’s students in Sustainability visit a Wastewater Treatment Plant
The students of the University-specific master’s degree in sustainability. Environment, society and economy
(University of Barcelona) visited the Baix Llobregat Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), one of the largest and most advanced sanitation facilities in Europe.
During the activity, the group was able to see firsthand the plant’s complete operation, from the arrival of wastewater to the various treatment and regeneration processes that allow its reuse for irrigation, industrial purposes, or safe return to the natural environment.
The plant stands out for its large operational capacity, being able to treat up to 420 million liters of water per day, a figure equivalent to the drinking water consumption of around 2 million people, in addition to the economic activity associated with the territory.
This experience allowed our students to complement the theoretical knowledge acquired in the master’s program with a practical understanding of water cycle management, appreciate the scale and complexity of environmental infrastructure, and gain insight into the professional reality of the sustainability sector.
