Seminar ‘From the conflict with Iran to the global crisis’: What is at stake?
CEI International Affairs and ”la Caixa” Foundation have organised a seminar to analyse the geopolitical and economic consequences of the conflict with Iran, as well as its implications for stability in the Middle East and the international balance of power.
Entitled From Regional War to Global Crisis: The Geopolitical and Economic Consequences of the Conflict with Iran, the discussion brought together two experts to reflect on the main challenges posed by the conflict and its potential repercussions worldwide.
The session featured Dr Jordi Quero, Tenure-Track Professor of International Relations at Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), and Dr Marie Vandendriessche, Assistant Professor in the Department of Global Governance at Esade Law School and Academic Director of the Bachelor’s Degree in Global Governance, Economics and Legal Order.

During the seminar, participants explored some of the key geopolitical and economic issues related to the conflict, with particular attention to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic importance of hydrocarbons and the impact on international markets.
The discussion also provided an opportunity to examine the role of the European Union and Spain, Russia’s strategic interests in the context of the war in Ukraine, and the potential implications of upcoming elections in the United States and Israel.
The event concluded with an interactive discussion, during which questions from the audience broadened the debate to include other relevant issues, such as the evolution of the petrodollar system, the role of the United Arab Emirates and the influence of non-state actors on the region’s political and security dynamics.
Through initiatives such as this, CEI reaffirms its commitment to fostering spaces for reflection and discussion that contribute to a deeper understanding of today’s geopolitical challenges.
