The keys to Spain’s international transformation, as explained by the director of the Elcano Royal Institute
CEI International Affairs welcomed Charles Powell, Director of the Elcano Royal Institute, on the occasion of the publication of his latest book, El rey Juan Carlos I y la proyección exterior de España. The session provided an opportunity to analyse the evolution of Spain’s foreign policy, as well as the country’s role in European integration and in shaping the main international consensuses of recent decades.
The event began with remarks by CEI’s Director, Mr Joaquim Llimona, who highlighted the importance of these activities for the Centre and their contribution to the education of young people committed to diplomacy.
This was followed by an introduction from Mr Jordi Xuclà, PhD in International Relations and President of the Catalan Council of the European Movement, who presented the author and highlighted some of the key issues addressed in the book.

The book examines some of the main milestones in the transformation of Spanish foreign policy during the reign of King Juan Carlos I, including Spain’s accession to the European Communities and its entry into NATO. The session offered an opportunity to review, through Charles Powell’s work, the evolution of Spain’s position on the international stage.
The presentation concluded with a discussion with the audience, allowing participants to explore in greater depth some of the issues raised during the session.
